After the publicity and criticism on social media of the provision of one of the draft laws, which provides for lowering the marriage age in Ukraine to 14 years, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, emphasized that such information is not true.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> in the corresponding post of the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada.<\/p>\n

According to him, the working group saw that society had an ambiguous perception of this norm. Therefore, a decision was made – based on the results of discussions – to remove this norm from the draft and leave the current one in force.<\/p>\n

“This provision will not be in the draft. We cannot make the other 1,949 articles of a large and fundamental bill dependent on the acceptance or rejection of the provisions of one article,” Stefanchuk wrote.<\/p>\n

The politician noted that the proposed norm would operate solely taking into account the “best interests of the child.” He noted that the project was not about lowering the marriageable age, but about an exceptional norm that could be applied only by court decision and only in specific cases – if a girl who has reached the age of 14 has given birth to a child or is pregnant.<\/p>\n

“So that a newborn child, regardless of the circumstances that he did not create, has a chance to grow up in a full-fledged, loving family, and not be left without a father or mother. The legal arguments here are unambiguous,” Stefanchuk wrote.<\/p>\n

Recall that in Ukraine, there were plans to revise the rules for concluding marriage – in the new draft of the Civil Code, it was proposed to lower the minimum age for marriage.<\/a><\/p>\n
