On February 4, 21-year-old Ukrainian refugee Kateryna Tovmash and her 28-year-old partner were shot and killed in North Carolina<\/span><\/span> . The tragedy occurred in a private home, according to local police and the victim’s brother, Mikhail Tovmash.<\/p>\n

According to investigators, the suspect is 25-year-old Caleb Gayden Fosno, the woman’s ex-boyfriend. He arrived in the state from Ohio<\/span><\/span> and likely broke into the house overnight. The family’s youngest children, two school-age sisters and a six-year-old brother, were present at the time.<\/p>\n

According to law enforcement, the man woke the children and forced the boy to take him to his sister’s room. Several shots were then fired. As a result of the shooting, Ekaterina Tovmash and her partner were killed instantly.<\/p>\n

The suspect fled after the crime but was later apprehended. He is charged with burglary and double murder.<\/p>\n

Ekaterina Tovmash was originally from Bila Tserkva<\/span><\/span> and lived in the United States for about two years.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“A refugee who fled the war in Ukraine to seek safety in the United States was murdered in her home in North Carolina. This is the second time in the past year that a Ukrainian woman seeking refuge in the state has been killed by a man,” the victim’s brother, Mikhail, wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

In August 2025, Ukrainian Irina Zarutskaya was also killed in the same state.<\/p>\n
