The United States under President Donald Trump is pressuring the alliance to scale back many of its overseas operations, including ending a key mission in Iraq, according to four NATO diplomats.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> Politico.<\/p>\n

In recent months, Washington has also lobbied to scale back NATO’s peacekeeping operation in Kosovo and sought to prevent Ukraine and allies from the Indo-Pacific region from officially participating in the alliance’s annual summit in Ankara in July.<\/p>\n

This initiative reflects the White House’s desire to see NATO solely as a Euro-Atlantic defense pact and to abandon decades of expanding the alliance into crisis management, global partnerships, and value-based initiatives that have long irritated the US president and his MAGA base.<\/p>\n

Under pressure from Washington, NATO is to reduce so-called “out-of-area operations,” which go beyond the alliance’s core missions of defense and deterrence. Diplomats say the initiative has been informally dubbed “return to factory settings” within the alliance.<\/p>\n

If the plan goes ahead, it could lead to a rapid reduction in NATO activities in former war zones and limit the participation of capitals, including Kyiv and Canberra, in formal talks this summer.<\/p>\n

The White House declined to comment on NATO’s partnership programs and global operations.<\/p>\n

Recall that the United States does not plan to withdraw from NATO.<\/a><\/p>\n
