The chairman of the European Parliament’s trade committee, Bernd Lange, has announced his intention to propose suspending the ratification of the trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. He cited the growing uncertainty in Washington’s trade policy as the reason.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bernd Lange noted that the European Union must first receive clear information from the White House regarding further steps in the trade area.<\/p>\n

“Pure customs chaos from the US government. No one can understand it anymore – only unanswered questions and growing uncertainty for the EU and other US trading partners,” said Bernd Lange.<\/p>\n

The statement came after the US Supreme Court overturned Donald Trump’s tariffs imposed under the emergency powers law.<\/p>\n

Previously, the European Parliament had already frozen the approval process of this agreement due to threats regarding Greenland.<\/p>\n

The trade deal was struck last summer between US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. It imposed a 15% tariff on most European goods and simultaneously eliminated tariffs on US exports.<\/p>\n

The deal was called uneven, but Europe agreed to it to avoid a full-scale trade war and maintain US support in the security sphere, particularly regarding Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the US Supreme Court ruled that the global tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump in April were illegal<\/a> . The decision was made by a majority of 6 votes to 3.<\/p>\n

Subsequently, US President Donald Trump announced an increase in global tariffs on imports from all countries of the world from 10% to 15%<\/a> . This decision was the next step after the announcement of the introduction of a 10% tariff and criticism of the Supreme Court ban.<\/p>\n
