The standout star of the Games was short track speed skater Arianna Fontana, who won two gold and one silver medals, bringing her total Olympic medal tally to 14. This made her the most decorated Olympic athlete in Italian history.

Breakthrough of the Netherlands and the USA, disappointment of Canada

The Netherlands, with 5 gold medals in short track and 5 in speed skating, finished 3rd in the medal standings, their best result in the country’s history. The Netherlands’ previous best finish was 4th place at the 1972 Sapporo Games. Jens van’t Wout was one of the leaders of the Dutch team with 3 gold medals and 1 bronze.

The USA finished in 2nd place thanks to victories in both hockey finals over Canada. Canada, which was expected to be in the top five, finished the Olympics in 11th place.

Brazil, Georgia and other medal debutants

The real sensation was the first-ever South American medal at the Winter Olympics, won by Lucas Broten, a former Norwegian alpine skier competing for Brazil, in the giant slalom.

The Georgian team won its first-ever medal at the Winter Games: Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava won silver in the pair figure skating. Denmark’s Viktor Gald Torup brought his country its first medal since 1998, silver in the mass start speed skating. Bulgaria won medals for the first time in 20 years: biathlete Lora Hristova and snowboarder Tarvel Zamfirov won 1 bronze each.

Ukraine without medals — the worst result in history

The Ukrainian team, represented by 46 athletes (25 men and 21 women) in 11 of 16 sports, was left without a single award for the first time since Vancouver 2010. Previously, in 2002 and 2010, the best results of Ukrainian athletes were 5th place. At the 2026 Games, the highest achievement was 6th place — in the team freestyle and in the luge relay.

As you know, today, February 22, at 9:30 p.m. Kyiv time , the closing ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games began in Verona, Italy. The celebrations will be held in the historic Verona Arena amphitheater.

Recall that Ukraine almost completed its performances at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy without winning any medals . This is the third time in history that the Ukrainian team has been left without awards at the Winter Olympics, and at the same time the worst result in terms of top places.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , Twitter , Telegram , and Instagram.

The XXV Winter Olympic Games concluded in Milan and Cortina, northern Italy, on February 22, with about 3,000 athletes from 85 countries competing for 116 medals in 16 sports.
