The Kremlin leadership had hoped for quick success, but it encountered resistance that was unexpected neither in Moscow nor in the world. The aggression, which began in 2014, has escalated into a sharp phase with massive missile strikes.

The Russians were counting on a lightning-fast takeover of Ukraine, as they were convinced that the Ukrainians were waiting for the Russians with bread and salt. But in fact, from the first hours of the invasion, the aggressor’s army met fierce resistance not only from the fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Guard, but also from ordinary citizens united in territorial defense units, volunteer formations of territorial communities, and volunteer organizations.

The resistance of the civilian population became a real challenge for the occupiers. Residents of Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions stopped the equipment with their bare hands, and in Kherson, Energodar and Melitopol people went out for weeks to protest under Ukrainian flags. In large cities, such as Kyiv or Odesa, citizens massively prepared means to repel the enemy.

Huge lines formed in front of military registration and enlistment offices across the country. Both experienced soldiers and very young volunteers joined the defense of the state, which became a symbol of national unity in the fight for independence.

Many politicians and diplomats around the world, either out of ignorance or intentionally, date the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war to February 24, 2022. However, Russia’s armed attack on Ukraine using regular ground forces and irregular armed formations began eight years earlier, in the second half of February 2014.

2022. Blitzkrieg fails in three days

The Russian leadership expected a quick victory and the capture of the Ukrainian capital within three to five days of the start of the full-scale invasion. The aggressor directed the main forces towards Kyiv, trying to capture strategic facilities, in particular the Gostomel airfield, using landings and heavy equipment from the Chernobyl zone.

The enemy was convinced that there would be no resistance from the local population. However, instead of support, the invaders met resistance not only from regular units, but also from ordinary citizens who massively joined the ranks of territorial defense and volunteer organizations.

The fighting in the Kyiv region became decisive for the fate of the capital. Although the enemy columns managed to reach Bucha, further advance was stopped thanks to the actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The inability to break through the defense forced the Russian command to completely withdraw its units from the region at the end of March.

2022. The “Northern Fortress” has survived

Resistance from residents of the northern regions of Ukraine became a critical factor that prevented the occupiers from establishing logistics for an attack on the capital. In Chernihiv region, the invaders tried to use the Novi Yarylovychi-Chernihiv highway as the main artery for transferring troops, but were met with mass protests and ambushes.

A special role in deterring the enemy was played by the inhabitants of Kolychivka, which remained the only connection between Chernihiv and the controlled territories. After the destruction of the last bridge across the Desna, the city was on the verge of disaster, but did not surrender. In Sumy region, the situation developed according to a similar scenario, where the landmines and villagers blocked the movement of the aggressor’s equipment.

Thanks to the actions of the Defense Forces and the activity of the population, the enemy suffered significant losses in equipment and fuel. This forced the Russian group “Center” to completely leave the territory of Sumy and Chernihiv regions in early April, retreating beyond the state border.

Chongar: The Unanswered Questions of 2022 in the Kherson Region

2022. Kharkiv and Kherson operations

In late 2022, the Ukrainian army launched two large-scale counteroffensives that radically changed the situation on the front. In the Kharkiv region, the operation began on September 6, catching the enemy by surprise and forcing him to throw millions of dollars worth of equipment. Success at Balaklia and Izyum allowed the liberation of about 500 towns and villages.

In the southeastern direction, by September 23, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine reached the administrative border with Kherson and Dnipropetrovsk regions and began to create a bridgehead for advancement. In November, they reached the right bank of the Dnipro River, while the occupiers withdrew to the left bank.

Thanks to the successful implementation of this operation, Ukraine liberated from the occupiers more than 200 settlements of the right-bank Kherson region and Mykolaiv region, and on November 11, the city of Kherson. Thousands of Ukrainians who remained in the city greeted their army with Ukrainian flags.

Throughout the nine months of the occupation of the region, the civil resistance movement “Yellow Ribbon” operated in uncontrolled territories. It continues its partisan actions in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and Crimea to this day.

1418 days of the Great War: the double meaning of January 11

2023-2024. Escape of the Black Sea Fleet and defense of bridgeheads

During 2023-2024, the Ukrainian Defense Forces carried out a series of maneuvers that forced the Russian command to reconsider the presence of its fleet in Crimea. The main success was the naval operations that forced Russia to relocate combat-ready ships of the Black Sea Fleet from occupied Sevastopol to Novorossiysk.

In addition to actions on the water, the Armed Forces of Ukraine switched to strategic defense on land. The most fierce clashes continued in the Kupyansk, Lymansk and Bakhmut directions. Defensive battles also unfolded for Vugledar and Bilogorivka. The main goal was to exhaust enemy reserves and destroy the occupiers’ equipment.

A separate achievement was the creation of a bridgehead near Krynyky after crossing the Dnieper in the fall of 2023. At the same time, long-range drones began to systematically strike fuel infrastructure facilities and oil refineries in the deep rear of the Russian Federation.

The Guardian investigation: how the authorities put Ukraine under attack in 2022

2024-2025. Kursk Offensive and Special Operation “Cobweb”

In 2025, the Ukrainian Defense Forces conducted a series of offensive operations that radically affected the plans of the Russian command. Active actions covered the Dobropil direction, as well as the Belgorod and Kursk regions. This decision was aimed at neutralizing the threat of encirclement of Ukrainian territories in the east and creating a “buffer zone”.

Thanks to timely strikes, Ukrainian units were able to prevent the expansion of the occupation zone and stabilize the situation on the front. Such maneuvers were a response to the enemy’s attempts to create additional tension along the border. In addition to their strategic importance, these operations were aimed at dispersing the enemy’s resources, which were planned to be used to capture new settlements in the Donetsk region.

In addition, the Security Service of Ukraine carried out an unprecedented strike on the enemy’s aviation infrastructure deep in its rear. On June 1, 2025, Operation “Web” was implemented, which covered military airfields in three different time zones simultaneously.

Drones simultaneously attacked four airports: Belaya, Diaghilev, Olenya and Ivanovo. This led to significant losses among the enemy’s most expensive equipment. According to Vasyl Malyuk (at that time the Head of the SBU), our drones hit 41 missile-carrying bombers of the Russian strategic aviation, including the A-50, Tu-95, Tu-22 M3 and the supersonic Tu-160.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

Today, February 24, marks four years since Russian troops launched a large-scale offensive against Ukraine.
