The question remains: could this invasion have been avoided? Were there other scenarios?

It is clear that Putin attacked back in 2014. When Ukraine was officially neutral. The medals were minted with the date when Yanukovych, loyal to Moscow, was still the president. It is clear that Moscow in its current form puts empire above all else. In 2013, Putin had all the benefits that could be bought with Russian resources and cheated out of for Russian reputation. And yet he climbed to break Ukraine under himself, to revive the empire.

The heroic defense of 2014-15 and the diplomatic trap for Putin in Minsk stopped a large-scale war and determined further actions: Ukraine and the world must deter Russia from renewing aggression, and look for opportunities and wait for the moment to return the occupied.

However, this path required great skill. War is not arithmetic, but mathematics. Ukraine had to constantly demonstrate the ability and readiness to inflict losses on the aggressor that would not justify the invasion. The way to this was missile programs, fortification of dangerous areas, constant improvement of weapons and training of troops…

This is what was canceled after 2019, after “looking into Putin’s eyes”, after the negotiations in Oman.

Remembering everything: how four years of the Great War passed

In February 2020, the implementation of missile and other programs is being “postponed”, the implementation of state defense orders is falling, some enterprises even have to reduce working hours. Despite the nominal increase in spending on “defense and security”, only the “law enforcement” component is actually growing – to the detriment of the military (the authorities adhere to this approach to this day). Troops are being withdrawn from positions and borders.

In general, this logic was described by Volodymyr Zelensky himself in the famous statement “We could increase the army, but then we would not be able to finance roads, and this is very important for us.”

Some experts explain this logic as “underestimation of risk” – they say, the authorities did not believe in the reality of the war with Russia. But, since the war had been going on since 2014 – it turned out that they did not believe in reality.

Whether there was more of incompetence, distrust of one’s own country, or malicious intent will be determined by the investigation. And the current government is behaving in such a way that such an investigation is inevitable.

Moreover, the “don’t look up” approach of the current government throughout 2021 and even early 2022, when the buildup of Russian troops with the clear intention of invasion was obvious to everyone, except those in power, raises too many questions.

“Don’t escalate, because Putin will attack”: how the evening of February 23 passed

Then there was the last chance to demonstratively prepare, forget about political differences, increase funding for the army, gather reservists, renew and replenish the borders with troops…

The government did the opposite.

The reaction of the “servants” to our rebuke on the morning of 02/24/22 was significant. In response to “So what, kebabs?!”, they only managed to answer “What about your NATO?”

They live in this paradigm to this day. Everyone is to blame. And they themselves believe that they owe nothing to anyone. As their leader commanded: “I owe you nothing.”

Instead, not even logic and strategy, but the instinct of self-preservation itself should push us towards something else. To unite forces and opportunities. That was a short period – when Kyiv was surrounded, and the enemy rushed into the country in many-kilometer columns.

Then the authorities forgot about road theft (although they tried to delay payments to their accomplices on projects), about the “two-for-one Moscow trip,” and about the intentions to imprison Poroshenko. The Rada worked in working discussions, which gave rise to effective solutions.

But the enemy fled from Kyiv, the fear passed, and the authorities got back to business as usual. Shit pouring and repression against the opposition, anti-corruption institutions, activists, journalists. Against this backdrop – billions of embezzlement. Promotion to positions not of capable and capable, but of loyal and spineless.

Chongar: The Unanswered Questions of 2022 in the Kherson Region

And because of this – insufficient support for the Defense Forces, lagging behind in protecting and supporting communities, weak foreign policy, when unconditional support at the beginning turned into a difficult competition.

All this can and must be fixed.

The very reasons that weakened Ukraine before the invasion and opened the way for the Russians are now weakening the possibilities of defeating the enemy and forcing him to retreat.

With each passing day, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Defense Forces in general do not receive adequate resources, protected generating capabilities are not deployed in communities, and abroad, not aid projects but applause from the domestic electorate are collected – the price is rising.

Because the price is paid in blood. And it is the duty of politicians to realize their responsibility. To form a coalition of unity and a professional government of salvation. This will allow us to neutralize the greatest threats – unprofessionalism, corruption, and the substitution of national tasks for petty aspirations to stay in power and avoid responsibility…

The period of decay of the “servants” is still ongoing. We must endure this time. And then take advantage of the opportunities.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

• Materials published in the “OPINIONS” section reflect the opinion of the author of the publication, who bears full responsibility for the accuracy of the information.
• The editorial staff of prm.ua may not share the opinions expressed in the author’s material.
• The owner of the webpage in the “OPINIONS” section is the author of the publication.

Source: Author’s Facebook page The fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion of the Twelve Years’ War in the centuries-long confrontation with the Horde.
