The US has suspended the sale of international assets of the Russian company Lukoil in order to use this decision as leverage to pressure Moscow during peace talks on Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> by Reuters, citing four informed sources.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to them, the issue of sanctions against oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft was discussed during previous rounds of negotiations in Geneva, Abu Dhabi, and Miami.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On February 26, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) will renew the general license. The deadline for concluding potential deals for Lukoil’s international assets will be postponed from February 28 to April 1.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The US Treasury Department is thus trying to strengthen its negotiating position and reach agreements that will reduce Russia’s revenues to finance the war.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The agency’s sources note that any deal would involve no upfront payments for Lukoil. All proceeds from the sale would be placed in a blocked account under US jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that Brian Lanza, a former senior adviser to Donald Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign, works as a consultant for the international division of the Russian oil company Lukoil.<\/a><\/p>\n
