European Commission spokesman Markus Lammert said in Brussels that the issue of the forced return of Ukrainian men of military age who are under temporary protection in the EU is not currently under consideration. According to him, no changes to the current temporary protection regime are expected this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Responding to questions about possible discussions in EU countries regarding the abolition of temporary protection for men of military age, the spokesman emphasized that the decision to grant such status was made at the EU and member state level until 2027.<\/p>\n

“I am not aware of the debate in Luxembourg. I can say that temporary protection is something we have decided at EU level and at member state level until 2027,” said Markus Lammert.<\/p>\n

He clarified that the relevant rules will remain in force at least until March 2027.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Luxembourg Times<\/a> reported that Luxembourg Defense Minister Yuriko Bakes expressed qualified support for Interior Minister Leon Gloden, who stated the need to return to Ukraine men fit for military service.<\/p>\n

“Initially there were a lot of women and children. In recent weeks and months we have seen more men coming as well. And I think that is actually a problem if, on the one hand, we are providing military support so that Ukrainians can defend themselves, and at the same time young men are coming to us,” said Yuriko Bakes.<\/p>\n

By the way, the Norwegian government plans to tighten the rules of stay for newly arrived conscripted men from Ukraine<\/a> .<\/p>\n

It is worth adding that as of January 2026, 5.6 million Ukrainians are abroad due to the war<\/a> , which is 400 thousand more than at the end of 2024. At the same time, in 2025, the rate of net departures across the western border decreased by 34% compared to 2024.<\/p>\n
