A full-fledged population census in Ukraine will be possible no earlier than one and a half to two years after the end of the war.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported<\/a> by Ukrinform with reference to the head of the State Statistics Service, Arsen Makarchuk.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to him, the State Statistics Service is currently also counting the approximate population size, but this data is not yet published.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“We have calculated these indicators and are now discussing with the government which ones can be made public,” Makarchuk said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He recalled that the last official population estimate was published by the State Statistics Service as of February 1, 2022. After the start of the full-scale war, many different calculations appeared – they are made by both state bodies and international organizations or researchers.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Because of this, estimates can vary significantly.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to Makarchuk, the difference between them sometimes reaches about four million people. That is why the exact figure can only be established after the census.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

“Even after the end of the war, you need to wait a certain amount of time. People have to return home, demobilization will take place, some of the military will return to civilian life. Only then will the census show the real picture,” he explained.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The head of the State Statistics Service added that the population census is needed not only to count the number of people. It also shows the age structure of the population, social conditions, and people’s access to infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Such data is used for planning state policy and regional development.<\/p>\n
