We know that in the near future, the most popular messenger in Russia, Telegram, will be blocked. And before that, processes began that were generally difficult to expect, especially for Moscow.

Since May 7, 2025, under the pretext of preparing for “Victory Day”, in some remote regions – Sakha, Primorye, Udmurtia, Urals, Siberia – mobile (and often also fixed) Internet began to be turned off – because of “strategically important enterprises”, “protection from Ukrainian UAVs”, etc. Once they started, they still haven’t stopped.

Then they completely turned off communications (not just mobile Internet) in the center of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other large cities – as protection from our drones. Putin simply signed a law that allows for restrictions on communications at the request of the FSB – and that’s it. Russian publications wrote about this harshly: “Mobile Internet is being turned off throughout the country until the end of the war with Ukraine.”

The restricted zones include train stations, restaurants in city centers, expensive stores… According to very rough estimates, the economic losses from such protection from our drones cost Moscow alone MORE than 1 billion rubles per day ($12.5 million)! But Russians are saying in unison, “Let’s be even. Let’s endure it” (did anyone expect anything different?)

Now the screws have been tightened even more: it has been a week since mobile Internet was completely cut off in Moscow and St. Petersburg. DW writes that even in the State Duma, both mobile Internet and WiFi have disappeared. According to Downdetector, only sites from the “white list” continue to work, including “Gosuslugi”, “VKontakte”, “Odnoklassniki”, Yandex services, marketplaces and resources of state bodies. However, according to other sources, in fact, the Internet is not working at all, and not just “bad” sites.

“There will be no cinema”: Russia almost completely destroyed its cinema due to “unpatrioticness”

Accordingly, entire business sectors are being killed: taxi services (navigation traffic), online deliveries, bookings… And, of course, ATMs, terminals, cash registers in supermarkets and markets. First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Alexander Yushchenko: “Yesterday, our faction deputies raised the issue that the Internet is not just a fad, it is an integral part of our lives. For example, parking in Moscow and many other cities must be paid for through an application.”

But in a couple of days, deputies of the same State Duma are already proposing to return payphones to the streets so that residents can make calls without a mobile connection. Interestingly, in Russia, even operators “do not have the right to inform their clients about the fact of the disconnection, its geography and duration” – the FSB is watching!

It is important that in Russia, the principle of access to online resources has been changed in general: now these are no longer “black lists” of prohibited resources (which were easily accessed via VPN), but “white lists”. Very short “white lists” – a dozen or two resources that Russians CAN access. And no more – the rest are closed, because they are not on the list. Another 2-3 weeks will “set up the infrastructure”, as they say, – and the blocking will be launched finally. In fact, a Chinese version of controlling information consumption by the population is being created… Not even Chinese, but something between Chinese and North Korean.

In 3-6 months, they will “determine the fate of VPN” – in the sense that they will ban its use. The technical base is already in place in Roskomnadzor, all that remains is to adjust the legislation. For now, it is forbidden to advertise bypassing page blocking: for distributing information about VPN services, a fine of $600-$1,000 ($6,000 for legal entities), for visiting each closed “extremist” page with a VPN, $40-60 (and almost everything about them is “extremist”).

Nabiullina’s revelations: how quickly the Russian economy will collapse

So, for over a year now, the Internet and communications have been cut off in the Russian provinces: in the border regions to the “Northern Front”, in the deep rear with airfields and oil infrastructure… But a province is a province, and Moscow is, in fact, another state. A state within a state. Much richer than the rest of Russia, more developed, etc. Moscow has a population of 10 to 15 million, and even more in the metropolitan area. This is a tenth of the population of all of Russia.

And what is most surprising is the speed at which information channels are being cut off. Why is this being done? There is an assumption that Putin was so scared of Khamenei being assassinated with guidance via the Internet and a command from AI that he decided to cut off the Internet altogether. But there are other, completely opposite versions.

It seems more likely to me that this is a sign of Putin’s intentions to take a break from the “SVO” at least for a while. Literally for a year or two. In order to accumulate strength. And he needs a fully controlled Internet so that Russians don’t come in with unnecessary initiatives, especially the patriotic part.

But the opposite version may also be true: he is going to intensify military operations and mobilize (as Strelkov, for example, demands from prison). Because with the current number of troops, it is impossible to occupy even half of Ukraine, let alone all of it. Accordingly, it is necessary to mobilize from one to three million Russians for the “Northern Front”.

Whatever the real reason, it’s still interesting to watch: how a country that has constantly talked about its advanced positions in digitalization simply turns into North Korea.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

• Materials published in the “OPINIONS” section reflect the opinion of the author of the publication, who bears full responsibility for the accuracy of the information.
• The editorial staff of prm.ua may not share the opinions expressed in the author’s material.
• The owner of the webpage in the “OPINIONS” section is the author of the publication.

Source: Author’s Facebook page Interesting events are taking place in Russia.
