Moldova has declared an environmental alert over the incident, as the river is one of the country’s key sources of water supply.

This was announced by the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

According to her, government services are already working to minimize the effects of pollution and ensure the safety of the population.

“We have declared an ecological emergency and are acting to protect our people. Russia bears full responsibility,” said Maia Sandu.

The Dniester River is one of the main sources of water supply for Moldova, so oil entering the water creates risks for the environmental situation and the water supply of the population.

Currently, the Moldovan authorities, together with environmental services, are assessing the scale of the pollution and taking measures to prevent the further spread of oil in the water.

Earlier, the Ukrainian side reported on transboundary pollution of the Dniester River after Russia’s attack on energy infrastructure. The Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine noted that on March 10, stains of technical oils were found in the river near the village of Lyadova, Yaryshivska rural territorial community, Mohyliv-Podilskyi district, Vinnytsia region.

According to preliminary data, the pollution may be related to the leakage of technical transformer oils from infrastructure facilities in the area of the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant in Chernivtsi region after the Russian attack on 07.03.2026.

“The pollution of the Dniester is likely related to the leakage of technical oils from infrastructure facilities in the area of the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Chernivtsi region, which occurred as a result of the Russian attack on March 7, 2026. The pollution spread downstream, in particular in the area of the village of Naslavcha in the Republic of Moldova,” the ministry reported.

The department also noted that Ukraine immediately informed the Moldovan side about the fact of transboundary pollution and is coordinating actions within the framework of the work of the Dniester Commission.

During the survey of the river, signs of water pollution were recorded in various areas. In particular, in the city of Mogilev-Podilskyi, oily spots were found on the water surface, a thin oily film was observed near the village of Kozliv, and near the village of Nagoryany, a characteristic oily film with a “rainbow” effect was observed along the shoreline and on a significant part of the water surface.

According to the results of measurements in the area of the village of Nagoryany, an excess of permissible indicators by 2.5 times was recorded – 0.127 mg/dm³ with a norm of 0.05 mg/dm³.

Thus, on March 12, an extraordinary meeting of the Dniester Commission was held, during which Ukrainian and Moldovan services agreed on further actions to localize the pollution and minimize environmental consequences.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

Following Russia’s attack on the Novodniestrovsk hydroelectric power plant, an oil spill occurred in the Dniester River.
