The UK is tightening its grip on Russia’s “shadow fleet.” From now on, military and law enforcement officers will be able to intercept and detain sanctioned vessels passing through British waters.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> on the website of the UK government.<\/p>\n

This is particularly true for important routes such as the English Channel. For such ships, this means a choice: either bypass these waters by taking longer and more expensive routes, or risk being detained.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Keir Starmer explained that this was part of the pressure on Russia.<\/p>\n

“Putin is rubbing his hands together over the war in the Middle East because he thinks higher oil prices will allow him to line his pockets. That is why we are pursuing his shadow fleet even more vigorously,” the British head of government explained.<\/p>\n

He also stressed that Britain would act tough: “We are not only looking after Britain’s security, but also depriving Putin’s war machine of the dirty profits that fund his barbaric campaign in Ukraine.”<\/p>\n

According to Starmer, London will continue to support Ukraine:<\/p>\n

“He and his henchmen should have no doubt: we will always defend our sovereignty and support Ukraine for as long as necessary,” Starmer stressed.<\/p>\n

The British government added that it was preparing to detain even those vessels that may be armed or trying to evade control. After that, owners, operators and crews could face criminal charges for violating sanctions.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, on March 12, the oil tanker Sea Owl, which probably belongs to the so-called \u201cshadow fleet\u201d of Russia, was detained<\/a> near the Swedish port city of Trelleborg in the Baltic Sea. The vessel is under European Union sanctions and is transporting oil or other liquid fuel.<\/p>\n

As previously reported, UK Defence Secretary John Healy has met with counterparts from the Baltic and Nordic countries to discuss the possibility of seizing tankers linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, in a move aimed at cutting off the revenue that is funding the war in Ukraine<\/a> .<\/p>\n
