US President Donald Trump has told aides that he is willing to end the US military campaign against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He has decided that the United States must achieve its main goals of disrupting Iran\u2019s navy and missile arsenal and winding down ongoing hostilities while applying diplomatic pressure on Tehran to restore the free flow of trade. If that fails, Washington will pressure allies in Europe and the Persian Gulf to take the lead in reopening the strait, the officials said.<\/p>\n

The newspaper’s sources add that Trump does not rule out force options, but they are not a priority at the moment. At the same time, ending the conflict without unblocking the strait will have strategic consequences: Iran will likely only strengthen control over the route, and its opening will have to be postponed.<\/p>\n
