Then Lavrov called the Hungarian minister with a request related to EU sanctions.

It was about Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, who wanted to have his sister Gulbahor Ismailova removed from the sanctions list.

“Listen, I’m calling at Alisher’s request… he asked me to remind you that you are doing something about his sister,” Lavrov said.

Szijjártó answered briefly: “Yes, of course,” and added that Hungary, together with Slovakia, is preparing a corresponding proposal to the European Union.

“We will do everything possible to have it removed from the list,” he noted.

The conversation also included a phrase that attracted particular attention from journalists: “I am always at your service.”

According to one of the European intelligence officers, the Hungarian minister’s communication style seems “submissive” and resembles a conversation between an informant and a curator.

Journalists note that the quality of the recording may indicate that the interception was carried out by the Russian side.

A few months after this conversation, Ismailova was indeed removed from the EU sanctions list. Along with her, sanctions were lifted from several other Russian figures.

Sources in EU diplomatic circles also said that Hungary and Slovakia regularly advocate for easing sanctions against individual Russians and promote such decisions during negotiations.

After the recordings were published, Péter Szijjártó responded on Facebook. He essentially confirmed the content of the conversations and made it clear that he saw nothing problematic about it.

According to him, he “says the same thing in public as he does on the phone.”

Szijjártó also once again criticized the EU sanctions, calling them ineffective. He stressed that Hungary will continue to block restrictions that it considers disadvantageous for itself.

In fact, the minister made it clear that his position has not changed, and Budapest will continue to defend its own line, even despite the resonance surrounding the published conversations.

It was previously reported that two US senators from different parties plan to introduce a bill that would impose sanctions against senior Hungarian officials for obstructing support for Ukraine.

As a reminder, the European Union has begun to limit Hungary’s participation in discussions on sensitive issues and is moving to narrow meeting formats. This decision is related to fears of confidential information leaking to Russia.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

Journalists have released audio recordings and transcripts of conversations between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
