In particular, the politician opposes Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union and does not support the transfer of weapons to Kyiv.

He also insists that the issue of Ukraine’s membership should be resolved through a referendum, and his party “Tisa” voted against the financial aid package for Ukraine in the European Parliament.

“Nobody wants a pro-Ukrainian government,” said Peter Magyar.

The politician emphasizes that he will act “in the interests of Budapest” and criticizes Ukraine for “violating the rights of the Hungarian minority.” During a public discussion between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Viktor Orban regarding the EU loan, Magyar supported the position of the Hungarian Prime Minister.

“No foreign leader has the right to threaten Hungarians,” said Peter Magyar.

The article notes that such a position creates a difficult situation for Brussels, which expects changes but is not confident in changing Hungary’s foreign policy.

Diplomats suggest that after a possible rise to power, Magyar may soften his rhetoric, as he will need to unblock EU financial aid frozen over rule of law issues. At the same time, he links the decision to support Ukraine to “public sentiment.”

According to journalists, critical sentiments towards Ukraine are widespread in Hungary.
