Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar, the main rival of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, may not become a pro-Ukrainian alternative for the European Union. His position on Ukraine on a number of issues coincides with the rhetoric of the current government.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Journalists note that despite European leaders’ expectations of a change in Budapest’s policy, Magyar’s statements often echo Orban’s position. In particular, the politician opposes Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union and does not support the transfer of weapons to Kyiv.<\/p>\n

He also insists that the issue of Ukraine’s membership should be resolved through a referendum, and his party “Tisa” voted against the financial aid package for Ukraine in the European Parliament.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody wants a pro-Ukrainian government,\u201d said Peter Magyar.<\/p>\n

The politician emphasizes that he will act “in the interests of Budapest” and criticizes Ukraine for “violating the rights of the Hungarian minority.” During a public discussion between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Viktor Orban regarding the EU loan, Magyar supported the position of the Hungarian Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
