Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the situation in the Middle East. The two sides expressed their intention to work together to reduce tensions and achieve a ceasefire.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the conversation, Wang Yi emphasized that the key way to resolve shipping problems in the Strait of Hormuz is to end hostilities as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

He also noted that China has consistently advocated a political settlement of crises through dialogue and negotiations.<\/p>\n

The conversation took place on the eve of a vote in the UN Security Council on a Bahraini resolution to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Wang Yi emphasized that China and Russia, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, must act with international support in mind.<\/p>\n

“China and Russia should adhere to an objective and balanced approach and strive to gain broader understanding and support from the international community,” Wang Yi said.<\/p>\n

The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the parties also discussed ways to achieve a ceasefire and launch a political and diplomatic dialogue.<\/p>\n

“Satisfaction was expressed with the convergence of approaches between Russia and China on most issues on the global agenda,” the department noted.<\/p>\n

The day before, US President Donald Trump said that countries affected by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz should “take their oil” themselves.<\/a><\/p>\n
