Iran plans to introduce payment for the transit of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz in cryptocurrency.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a levy of one dollar per barrel of oil, which Tehran wants to receive in bitcoins. In this way, the authorities seek to strengthen control over the strategic route during the temporary ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Hamid Hosseini, a spokesman for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Exporters Union, said the country would collect duties on each tanker and conduct individual assessments of the vessels.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to him, Iran should control the shipments to avoid possible weapons supplies during a pause in hostilities.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Each ship will have to report its cargo in advance via email. The Iranian side will then determine the amount of the fee to be paid in digital currency.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hosseini clarified that the tariff will be $1 per barrel, while empty tankers will be able to pass for free.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He also noted that vessels will only be given a few seconds to pay in bitcoin after assessment to avoid being tracked or confiscated due to sanctions.<\/p>\n

The rules of passage through the Strait of Hormuz are decided by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Tehran is expected to require tankers to take a northern route near its coast.<\/p>\n

It is currently unknown whether ships affiliated with Western countries or Gulf states will agree to operate under the new terms.<\/p>\n

As previously reported, world oil prices continued to rise amid escalating US rhetoric towards Iran and risks to supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/a><\/p>\n
