Indian refineries have increased purchases of Russian oil and plan to maintain high volumes until the end of the year due to a shortage of supplies from the Middle East.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the agency notes, India – the world’s third-largest oil importer – has been actively buying Russian crude since 2022, taking advantage of discounts amid sanctions against Russia. Last year, the situation changed after pressure from US President Donald Trump, who demanded a reduction in imports and imposed restrictions on Russian producers.<\/p>\n

However, after the US and Israeli strikes on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Washington granted an exemption from the sanctions to contain the rise in oil prices. This permission was later expanded and extended.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After the first easing, India purchased about 60 million barrels of Russian oil for delivery this month.<\/p>\n

Indian refiners say they expect the US exemptions to continue, but even without them, purchases are unlikely to decline significantly due to limited supply alternatives.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to analysts, in March, imports of Russian oil to India reached almost 2 million barrels per day – the highest since mid-2023. In April, the figure temporarily decreased due to maintenance at one of the large refineries, but new growth is expected in the near future.<\/p>\n

In addition, India is actively considering purchasing Russian liquefied gas, which is offered at significant discounts on the Asian market.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that the Donald Trump administration is preparing to continue easing sanctions on Russian oil this week<\/a> . A similar decision may be made regarding Iran.<\/p>\n
