Iran has been unable to fully open the Strait of Hormuz<\/span><\/span> to allow increased shipping due to problems with its own naval mines.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/span><\/span><\/a> reports this, citing sources.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the publication, the Iranian military is unable to effectively identify the mines they have planted and lacks sufficient capabilities to defuse them.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The situation is complicated by the fact that some of the mines are drifting \u2013 they can move in the water, creating an additional hazard for shipping.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi<\/span><\/span> previously stated that the strait would be opened “subject to technical limitations.” The US believes these statements directly refer to the difficulties involved in mine clearance.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It is noted that it was precisely these problems that prevented Iran from quickly complying with the Donald Trump<\/span><\/span> administration’s demands to restore full maritime traffic.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In March, Iran began mining the strait using small vessels amid its war with the US and Israel.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Due to the threat of mines, as well as potential drone and missile strikes, the movement of oil tankers and other vessels through the Strait of Hormuz has sharply declined. This has led to a rise in global energy prices and strengthened Iran’s hand in the standoff.<\/p>\n

At the same time, according to the NYT, Iran only allows passage to ships that pay a fee, although transit through the strait was previously free.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Iranian military also warned of the risk of ships colliding with mines and published routes considered relatively safe.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Iran confirmed a two-week ceasefire with the United States<\/a> and stated its readiness to open the Strait of Hormuz for this period.<\/p>\n
