On Tuesday, April 14, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held<\/a> a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which he made several statements.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cToday we are continuing the format of German-Ukrainian intergovernmental consultations after an almost 20-year hiatus,\u201d Merz said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He emphasized that cooperation with Ukraine today is more effective, the partnership is stronger, and friendship and connection are deeper than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chancellor noted that the parties are raising bilateral relations to the level of a strategic partnership.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ukraine and Germany have discussed three areas for cooperation in the coming months and years. Among them are economic dynamism and innovation, the modernization and digitalization of public services, industrial recovery, and public relations.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were also new support packages for air defense, long-range weapons, drones, and ammunition.<\/span> The defense ministries also agreed on electronic data exchange for combat.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, Merz drew attention to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, stating that Germany supports this process. According to him, this cannot happen “quickly and fully.” However, EU membership will be a strategically important step for the security and well-being of Europe, so Ukraine must develop reforms in the areas of the rule of law and the fight against corruption.<\/span><\/p>\n

The German Chancellor also mentioned the billion-dollar loan for Ukraine. He advocates for prompt payment of military support funds. In addition, Ukraine’s partners are working to destroy Russia’s sources of funding, so new measures against the “shadow fleet” are being discussed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Separately, Merz commented on the absence of Europeans at the negotiating table. He assured us that officials want to resolve this issue as soon as possible. The Chancellor is convinced that there will be no agreements with Russia without Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among other things, Merz noted that Germany supports Ukraine’s efforts<\/a> to restrict the travel of men of military age to European Union countries.<\/p>\n
