The United States prohibits it from doing so,” said Donald Trump.

The previous day, on April 16, a 10-day ceasefire was agreed between Israel and Lebanon, which took effect at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The agreement provides for a pause in hostilities with the possibility of further negotiations.

Before the ceasefire took effect, hostilities intensified: Israeli forces launched strikes on southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah carried out missile and drone attacks on northern Israel. According to the Lebanese side, the strikes resulted in deaths and injuries.

The Israeli army reported the destruction of the group’s launchers, headquarters, and fighters on the eve of the agreement coming into force.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention to move to direct negotiations with Lebanon on the disarmament of Hezbollah and the normalization of relations. According to journalists, during the contacts, the parties discussed a ceasefire, de-escalation of hostilities, and the prospects for a broader peace agreement.

Earlier, it was reported that French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with representatives from about 30 countries to discuss the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
