The Pentagon’s chief political representative, Elbridge Colby, stated during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Berlin that changes in approaches to international military support for Ukraine are necessary. He emphasized that future assistance cannot depend solely on the United States and requires greater participation from European allies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During his speech, Colby noted that the previous support model relied heavily on the use of limited American reserves.<\/p>\n

“Europe must accelerate the process of assuming primary responsibility for the continent’s conventional defense. This is not a matter of choice, but of strategic necessity,” Colby said.<\/p>\n

He added that further assistance to Kyiv should not be based on significant US involvement, and allies should increase their own contributions to the production and financing of defense needs.<\/p>\n

“Europe must put the continent’s defense and, as a result, its military support for Ukraine on a truly sustainable footing,” Colby said.<\/p>\n

According to the Kiel Support Tracker, in 2025, US military aid to Ukraine decreased by 99 percent, while European countries increased support.<\/p>\n

At the same time, it is noted that Europe increased financial and humanitarian assistance by 59 percent, and military assistance by 67 percent compared to the average for 2022-2024. The total amount of support remained approximately at the level of previous years.<\/p>\n

Against the backdrop of these changes, European allies, during a meeting in Berlin, announced a new wave of assistance to Ukraine, focused on the supply of drones, air defense systems, and long-range strike equipment.<\/p>\n
