NASA plans to conduct a fire experiment on the Moon as part of its combustion research program by the end of 2026. The main goal is to obtain data on the behavior of flames in lunar gravity to improve the safety of manned missions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the “Material Flammability on the Moon” (FM2) experiment, which plans to ignite 4 solid fuel samples and record the combustion characteristics in partial gravity. The data obtained should become the basis for assessing fire safety during space missions.<\/p>\n

NASA notes that there is currently no complete database on the flammability of materials outside of Earth, and the experiment will allow us to move from theoretical models to practical measurements.<\/p>\n

On Earth, the shape of a flame is formed by gravity as hot gases rise upward. In microgravity, this process happens differently, changing the shape and behavior of the fire.<\/p>\n

According to the plan, the experiment involves long-term observation of combustion in the lunar environment, which will allow determining the speed of flame spread and other parameters.<\/p>\n

NASA also notes that lunar gravity may pose additional risks, as the speed at which flames spread may depend on the level of gravity.<\/p>\n

The results obtained are planned to be used to improve materials, structures, and safety systems within the Artemis program, which envisages further manned missions to the Moon.<\/p>\n
