Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine needs at least 5.4 billion euros to prepare its power system for winter. At the same time, the system needs an additional 6.5 gigawatts of capacity for stable operation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the minister, part of the necessary capacity is planned to be restored through repairs, as well as through the development of new energy sources.<\/p>\n

“Currently, Ukraine’s energy system needs an additional 6.5 gigawatts of capacity. Of these, we plan to restore 4.5 gigawatts through repairs and add about 2 gigawatts through distributed cogeneration and renewable energy,” said Denys Shmyhal.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that a key area of preparation for winter is strengthening the protection of energy infrastructure with the support of international partners.<\/p>\n

“We are talking about air defense systems, primarily MIM-104 Patriot complexes and PAC-3 missiles to protect against ballistic threats. We have successful experience in destroying 100% of cruise missiles. We also have more or less successful experience in intercepting about 90% or even more drones. But we still cannot intercept ballistic missiles throughout the territory of Ukraine. Therefore, active defense with the support of partners is priority number one,” Denys Shmyhal said.<\/p>\n

Separately, the minister drew attention to the need to develop passive protection of energy facilities.<\/p>\n

“These are concrete shelters with pre-blast screens for all energy facilities. This is another type of protection that needs to be built. This is continuous work, because all energy facilities must be covered with such structures,” said Denys Shmyhal.<\/p>\n

He also reported that Ukrainian specialists have already inspected 8 decommissioned thermal power plants in European countries to search for equipment that can be transferred to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“We are now moving to the stage of physical delivery of this equipment to damaged energy facilities. Logistics and dismantling are an important part of the support we need from partners,” said Denys Shmyhal.<\/p>\n

According to him, the need to create a reserve of equipment for rapid repairs, which amounts to about 293 million euros, is being separately assessed.<\/p>\n

“In general, Ukraine needs at least 5.4 billion euros to implement the necessary measures before the start of the cold season,” Denys Shmyhal concluded.<\/p>\n

It is noted that the Ukraine Energy Coordination Group Conference brings together international partners to coordinate support for Ukraine’s energy sector in the face of Russian attacks.<\/p>\n

By the way, during the meeting of the “Energy Ramstein”, Ukraine’s partners announced the allocation of 100 million euros for winter preparations.<\/a> The funds will be channeled through the Energy Support Fund.<\/p>\n
