German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested on Monday, April 27, that Ukraine may have to accept that parts of its territory could remain outside Kyiv’s control in a future peace deal with Russia, linking such concessions to the country’s prospects for joining the European Union.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by Reuters<\/a> .<\/p>\n

“At some point, Ukraine will sign a ceasefire agreement; at some point, hopefully, a peace treaty with Russia. Then it may happen that part of Ukraine’s territory will no longer be Ukrainian,” Merz said, speaking to students at the Karol Magnus Gymnasium in Marsberg, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, on Monday, April 27.<\/p>\n

“If President Zelensky wants to convey this to his own population and get a majority for this, and he needs to hold a referendum on this issue, then he must simultaneously tell the people: ‘I have opened the way for you to the EU,'” Merz added.<\/p>\n

The German Chancellor, however, cautioned against hopes for Ukraine’s quick accession to the European Union, stating that Ukraine cannot join the EU during a time of war and must first meet strict criteria, including those related to the rule of law and the fight against corruption.<\/p>\n

“Zelensky had the idea of joining the EU on January 1, 2027. It won’t work. Even January 1, 2028 is unrealistic,” Merz said.<\/p>\n

Merz proposed interim steps for Ukraine towards the EU, such as granting Ukraine an observer role in EU institutions, which he said met with broad approval among European leaders at their summit last week in Cyprus, which Zelensky attended.<\/p>\n

Among other things , Merz noted that Germany supports Ukraine’s efforts<\/a> to restrict the travel of men of military age to European Union countries.<\/p>\n
