After more than a year of such contacts that have not yielded tangible results, the Ukrainian authorities and society are increasingly calmer about such talks.

This is reported by the New York Times .

Journalists note that as early as 2025, telephone conversations between Trump and Putin caused concern in Kyiv due to fears that Ukraine’s interests could be the subject of agreements without its participation. After each contact between Washington and Moscow, the Ukrainian authorities tried to clarify the details of the negotiations and assess their consequences.

However, Kyiv’s reaction after the April 30 phone call was much more restrained. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had instructed his team to clarify the details of the discussion, including the proposal for a short-term ceasefire in May, before making further decisions.

The article notes that the news of the Trump-Putin conversation attracted almost no attention in the Ukrainian media. Ukrainian officials and analysts explain this by the fact that numerous previous contacts between the parties did not bring the end of the war any closer.

“We no longer pay much attention to such calls because they do not yield any tangible results,” said Oleksandr Merezhko, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada’s Foreign Policy Committee.

At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine will continue to maintain working relations with the United States as a key military partner.

Journalists also note a change in public sentiment in Ukraine regarding Trump’s role in ending the war. At the end of 2024, most Ukrainians positively assessed his return to power and hoped for a quick end to the war. However, a year later, according to a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, about 75% of Ukrainians consider this to be a negative factor.

According to the publication, during this time, 11 telephone conversations took place between Trump and Putin, which did not yield significant results for a peaceful settlement.

It is separately noted that Ukraine is increasingly focusing on preparing for a long war and developing its own defense production. This includes, in particular, increasing the production of long-range drones and financing the defense industry with the support of European partners.

“I think it doesn’t mean anything. Given the effectiveness of Trump’s calls, they all amount to zero,” said Kyiv resident Alina Kryvenko.

Another resident of the capital, Polina Rovner, said that after a large number of such contacts, she stopped “paying them much attention.”

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that he had spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin . He noted that the mutual hatred between the leaders is preventing an end to the war.

On the eve of the meeting, US President Donald Trump said that the United States is currently focused on Iran, not on Russia’s war against Ukraine . At the same time, he did not give a specific answer regarding the prospects for peace talks.

By the way, US President Donald Trump believes that the United States should not have intervened in the war in Ukraine and spent significant funds to support Kyiv.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

The attitude in Ukraine towards the phone conversations between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war has changed.
