The reason is the struggle for control over energy routes, transport corridors and digital infrastructure against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East.

This is reported by Bloomberg .

The South Caucasus is increasingly becoming one of the key geopolitical regions in the confrontation between the West and Russia. The United States, the European Union, Turkey, and China are actively strengthening their influence in the region, which Moscow has considered its own sphere of dominance for decades.

The Caucasus has gained particular importance due to Russia’s war against Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East. Sanctions, instability in the Persian Gulf, and restrictions on traditional trade routes have led the West to seek alternative ways to transport energy resources and goods between Europe and Asia.

According to PRISM Strategic Intelligence analyst Kate Mallinson, the US interest in the South Caucasus is currently unprecedented. She believes that Washington seeks to integrate the countries of the region into a broader system of economic and transport ties with Turkey and Central Asia, which is gradually undermining the Kremlin’s positions in Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Armenia has become one of the main centers of this policy. In the coming days, Yerevan will host a meeting of the European Political Community and the first EU-Armenia summit. Brussels plans to deepen cooperation with Yerevan in the areas of transport, energy, digital infrastructure and security.

According to journalists, the EU is preparing a partnership agreement on transport infrastructure, which could provide funding of up to 2.5 billion euros. The aim is to support transport and energy ties after a possible peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as a gradual warming of relations between Yerevan and Ankara.

In addition to the economy, the West is also seeking to strengthen security cooperation with Armenia. The EU is considering creating a civilian mission to assist in cybersecurity and counter disinformation.

The United States, in turn, supports the creation of a transport corridor through southern Armenia. Washington plans to participate in the management of road and rail routes, as well as in the development of oil and gas pipelines and digital networks. Bloomberg notes that the war in Iran and disruptions in trade through the Persian Gulf have only strengthened the strategic importance of the Caucasus.

At the same time, Turkey is moving closer to opening its border with Armenia, which has remained closed since 1993. Despite the lack of air traffic, the parties have already established diplomatic contacts.

Against this background, Russia is gradually losing some of its influence in the region. The war against Ukraine has significantly depleted Moscow’s resources and limited its ability to actively intervene in the processes in the Caucasus. However, analysts emphasize that it is too early to speak of a complete defeat of the Kremlin.

Expert Natia Seskuria notes that while the administration of US President Donald Trump is creating incentives for the countries of the Caucasus to seek alternative partners, Russian influence in the region still remains significant. In particular, Armenia continues to be a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, and a Russian military base is located on its territory.

By the way, Iran has submitted a new proposal to the United States to resolve the war in the Middle East. The initiative involvesopening the Strait of Hormuz and postponing negotiations on the nuclear program.

Recall that Donald Trump said that the US will receive Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile one way or another, warning that this could happen “in a much more unfriendly form” if the negotiations fail.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

The United States and the European Union are increasing their political and economic presence in the South Caucasus, seeking to weaken Russia’s long-standing influence in the region.
