A suspected outbreak of a rare hantavirus has killed three people and sickened at least three others on the MV Hondius cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean. One patient is in intensive care in South Africa, and the WHO is conducting an epidemiological investigation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The World Health Organization said that at least 1 case of hantavirus infection has been confirmed so far. Laboratory studies and sequencing of the virus are also ongoing.<\/p>\n

“WHO is aware of a public health incident associated with a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean,” the WHO said.<\/p>\n

The MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged cruise ship, set sail from Argentina about three weeks ago. The ship’s itinerary included Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and other stops, before ending in the Canary Islands in Spain.<\/p>\n

The first victim was a 70-year-old man who died on board the ship. His body was removed from the liner on the island of St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n

His wife then died in a hospital in South Africa after falling ill at the airport while trying to fly to the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Another patient, a British citizen, is in intensive care in Johannesburg. According to South African authorities, he fell ill near Ascension Island after the ship left St. Helena.<\/p>\n

The WHO reported that two more crew members have symptoms of the disease and require urgent medical attention. The ship is currently off the coast of Cape Verde, where local authorities have not yet allowed passengers to leave the ship.<\/p>\n

According to Oceanwide Expeditions, there were about 150 tourists and approximately 70 crew members on board the ship at the time of the outbreak.<\/p>\n

Hantaviruses are spread primarily through contact with the urine or feces of infected rodents, including rats and mice. The WHO notes that in rare cases, the infection can be transmitted between people.<\/p>\n

“Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew members,” the WHO said.<\/p>\n

In South Africa, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases is conducting contact tracing in the Johannesburg region to identify possible cases of infection among people who had contact with passengers on the ship.<\/p>\n
