A series of powerful explosions were heard in the Russian city of Cheboksary on the night of Tuesday, May 5. According to local residents, at first a characteristic rumble was heard in various areas, after which bright flashes appeared in the sky and explosions were heard. Before that, a missile alert was declared in the city and sirens were turned on.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eyewitnesses also report thick smoke rising over one of the areas. This may indicate that a specific object was hit, although there is no official information about the consequences yet. <\/p>\n

According to preliminary data, the VNIIR-Progress plant could have been hit. This is an enterprise that specializes in the production of radio electronics and navigation systems, in particular, Comet modules. Such systems are used in Russian drones, as well as in cruise and ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n

In addition, there is information about damage to civilian infrastructure – in particular, a shopping center in the south of the city, where the facade and windows were probably damaged.<\/p>\n

Currently, data on the extent of the destruction and possible casualties are being clarified.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck at warehouses of drones, ammunition, fuels and lubricants, and air defense facilities<\/a> of the Russian occupiers in the temporarily occupied territories.<\/p>\n

By the way, Russia declared a so-called ceasefire on May 8 and 9<\/a> , but at the same time threatened to strike the center of Kyiv in case of attempts to disrupt the parade in Moscow.<\/p>\n
