But the story of the “parade in Moscow” is increasingly resembling a classic Kremlin information and psychological operation. The only question is what its real goal is.

Judge for yourself. For the past two weeks, a whole lot of conspiracy theories have been circulating in Moscow. Information is being thrown in that Putin is hiding somewhere other than in his residences and that the Communist Party is allowing opposition rallies (where, apparently, the participants are being re-registered). Sobchak records Ilya Remeslo, a military correspondent, talking about Navalny, Prigozhin, and stopping the war. Where is the FSB looking?

This looks like a controlled release of steam and at the same time a test of public reaction. At the same time, competition for influence between political players is intensifying in the Kremlin.

Against this background, Putin is sending signals to the outside world. There was supposedly some kind of appeal to Trump, some letters to European leaders, and talk of a “truce.” All this is superimposed on the Ukrainian information context, where the thesis that “Putin is afraid of Ukraine” is actively spreading. And he responds to Zelensky’s proposal to start a truce on May 6 with drone strikes.

But here a key contradiction arises. If it is “afraid,” why is it responding with strikes to Kyiv’s proposals to introduce a ceasefire on May 6? Why, instead of de-escalation, do we have the opposite—an escalation of attacks?

The May 9 Attack and the Endless ‘War of Statements’

It is in this contradiction that the real answer may lie. Because the logic of such special campaigns is not to convince someone of something. But, on the contrary, it’s confusing. To create several realities at the same time and force the audience to choose the most false one. This all looks very similar to the classic model of controlled information chaos.

What does this give the Kremlin? First, it creates an external effect. Russia is once again trying to convince us that the Kremlin is looking for peace, while Ukraine wants escalation.

Secondly, the internal effect. The atmosphere of instability, rumors of threats, and strange signals from above—all this prepares Russian society for unpopular decisions. Including a new wave of mobilization—open or hidden.

Third, the military aspect. Information noise distracts and shifts focus; it creates the illusion that the main event is already happening (parade, “truce,” internal problems of the Russian Federation), while real actions may be being prepared in another plane.

That is why the link to May 8-9 may not be a goal, but only a cover for an organized attack, which foreign intelligence services are warning about. As an option.

Not all of these signals are part of a single plan. But the risks should not be underestimated. The information background is heated, the messages are contradictory, and the audiences—both internal and external—are gradually being led to the necessary conclusions. And this whole story may turn out to be just a smokescreen for the decisions that the Kremlin is already ready to implement.

The question is, which ones?

Putin’s anti-rating: why Russians are not ready for mass protests

As a reminder, Russia declared a so-called ceasefire on May 8 and 9, but at the same time threatened to strike the center of Kyiv in case of attempts to disrupt the parade in Moscow.
