President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sharply escalated his tone in his communications with European partners, causing outrage among allies and tension between Kyiv and Brussels.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2026, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is increasingly lecturing his European allies and has adopted a harsher, more authoritarian tone in his communications with them. He is dissatisfied that Ukraine, which has been holding back Russian aggression for five years, is being denied fast-track accession to the EU. According to<\/a> Politico, this is irritating the Europeans.<\/p>\n

The publication notes that the Ukrainian leader is bolstered by growing confidence in Ukraine’s resilience, leading him to become less cautious. According to journalists, this was influenced by Ukraine’s experience of perhaps the worst winter of the war. Furthermore, Ukraine is becoming a self-sufficient defense hub: it already produces almost half of its own weapons needs and plans to export drones to the Middle East.<\/p>\n

“For now, relations between Kyiv and Brussels are tense and have probably reached their lowest point since the war,” says a former Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n

At an informal EU leaders’ summit in Cyprus in April, European allies criticized Zelenskyy for his expectations of EU accession and his rejection of gradual membership.<\/p>\n

Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes Kyiv “deserves full membership in the European Union.” “Zelenskyy and many other Ukrainians truly believe they are fighting not just for Ukraine, but for all of Europe and the West. And so there’s no need to be grateful to anyone or soften their requests,” explains a Republican foreign policy expert who has advised Kyiv in the past.<\/p>\n

Specifically, at the World Economic Forum in Davos in February, Zelenskyy rebuked European leaders. “This was quite unexpected. Zelenskyy is dissatisfied with how the Europeans mobilized support,” says Natia Seskouri, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based think tank.<\/p>\n
