These include Chinese machine tools, engines, and components for drones, microcircuits, and other critically important elements without which Russia could not wage the current war.

In fact, the US is trying to exchange China’s assistance in ending the war in Ukraine for concessions in the trade confrontation.

However, the Ukrainian issue is unlikely to be the main one in these negotiations. The main focus will be on American tariffs, which in some places reached 145%; the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz; and the Taiwan issue, which remains a risk of a direct military clash between the US and China.

Unlike China, which has long had no real combat experience, the United States is currently waging a war against Iran and is simultaneously gaining unique experience from the war in Ukraine. The information gathered on the Ukrainian battlefield is helping the Americans improve their own weapons and create new systems.

The example of the American company Palantir Technologies, whose director arrived in Kyiv this week, shows how data obtained by the Ukrainian military under modern-warfare conditions is used to train military artificial intelligence. These systems are later used by the US and Israeli armies.

The Kremlin on the Brink: How Xi and Trump Can Help Ukraine

As a result, the American military receives combat-proven technologies that are improved as long as the war continues. China does not have this advantage. Its military systems have not been tested in the conditions of a modern large-scale conflict, and this may also push Beijing to be interested in ending the war in Ukraine.

Another thing is obvious: China is not currently in a position to engage in a tough confrontation with the United States. The Chinese economy has been slowing for several years, and trade wars are making further development difficult, so Beijing will try to avoid a sharp escalation with Washington.

Many expect China to make certain “gestures” in return that will allow Donald Trump to return home with a result that can be presented to the American voter as an “American triumph.” However, it is currently difficult to predict what concessions Beijing will agree to. This will largely depend on Trump’s own position.

In any case, it is unlikely that we should expect any breakthroughs regarding the end of the war in Ukraine. The US administration is currently much more focused on the war against Iran and the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz, so the Ukrainian issue is unlikely to be among the key ones.

Trump excluded military aid to Ukraine from the US budget for 2027

However, Putin is due to arrive in China right after the US president’s visit. So, the issue of China’s support for Russia will, in any case, become a separate line of negotiations.

We must understand that Beijing will not be about seeking justice but about trading interests, where Ukraine is just one of the pieces on the global chessboard.

The war in Ukraine has effectively turned Russia into a resource appendage of China. And the longer Russia remains in international isolation, the more profitable it is for Beijing.

At the same time, China is interested in improving relations with the US and Europe, as this opens up opportunities for new contracts, including for the future reconstruction of Ukraine after the war.

Therefore, while it is unlikely that Beijing will start openly pressuring Russia immediately after the US president’s visit, it certainly has the opportunity to do so. Whether China will take advantage of them will be seen in the near future.

Also, follow “Pryamyi” on Facebook, X, Telegram, and Instagram.

• Materials published in the “OPINIONS” section reflect the opinion of the author of the publication, who bears full responsibility for the accuracy of the information.
• The editorial staff of prm.ua may not share the opinions expressed in the author’s material.
• The owner of the webpage in the “OPINIONS” section is the author of the publication.

Source: Author’s Facebook page Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to China on May 15–17 is expected to focus on global security and trade, but the negotiations could also potentially include discussions on ways to end the war in Ukraine.
