In 2025, 436 cases of hantavirus infection were registered in Ukraine, and in the first three months of 2026 alone, another 63.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by the Center for Public Health in response to a request from hromadske.<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The largest number of cases in 2025 was recorded in Sumy region – 428. Two more cases were detected in Lviv and Chernihiv regions, as well as one each in Kharkiv and Cherkasy regions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the first three months of 2026, the situation remained similar: 58 cases were recorded in Sumy region, three in Chernihiv region, and one each in Kirovohrad and Vinnytsia regions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For comparison, in 2024, only three cases of hantavirus were registered in Ukraine – two in Lviv region and one in Kharkiv region.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In 2023, there were also three cases – one each in Lviv, Kyiv, and Zaporizhia regions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Public Health Center notes that over the past three years, the largest number of infections has been recorded in Sumy, Lviv, and Chernihiv regions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

At the same time, experts emphasize that all cases recorded in Ukraine are associated with strains that are transmitted from rodents to humans.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Andes strain of hantavirus, which can be transmitted from person to person, has never been recorded in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Earlier, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that countries should prepare for a possible increase in the number of hantavirus cases.<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As a reminder, “Pryamiy” reported<\/a> that on board the MV Hondius cruise ship, where hantavirus was detected, the evacuation of part of the crew, including Ukrainian citizens, has begun. One Ukrainian is to be delivered to the Netherlands by a separate special flight, four more Ukrainian citizens remain on the ship and continue to perform their official duties.<\/p>\n
