May 20, 2019, was a Monday. Given the new government’s penchant for superstition, the occult, and classic Soviet cinema, one might have expected them to choose a different date. Because “no matter what they do, things don’t go well: it seems their mother gave birth to them on a Monday.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Those involved in the process say that Zelensky’s team did indeed try to reschedule the inauguration. But there were dates just before May 20th that seemed inappropriate for celebration: May 18th is the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Crimean Tatar Genocide, and May 19th is the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repression. Zelensky’s team didn’t want to wait another day or two (the deadline was May 30th): they really wanted to get to the controls.<\/p>\n

The campaign’s beneficiaries\u2014Kolomoisky, Shefir\u2014and Zelensky himself gave interviews that simply oozed impatience. They wanted to reconcile with Russia, correct the excesses of Ukrainization, deal with opponents… in short, return everything to the way it was.<\/p>\n

So, Monday was enough. Zelenskyy became president of Ukraine, promising to demonstrate a new quality of politics within his single term.<\/p>\n

Almost all the promises were fulfilled in exactly the opposite way. Much has been written about this:<\/p>\n

– instead of peace \u2013 a full-scale war;<\/p>\n

– instead of fighting corruption, there is a rampant spread of it, unprecedented even under Yanukovych, and about 40% of respondents believe that Zelensky is involved in it, and about 30% believe that he is well informed;<\/p>\n

– instead of improving life and solving social problems, the economy will collapse already in the fall of 2019, leading to an anvil and a full-scale invasion…<\/p>\n

It turns out that “it will get worse.” The harmfulness of electing random people, brought to power through media technology, so that “there’ll be enough for the grandchildren,” as the newly appointed “new faces” estimated the size of the spoils, has been experimentally confirmed.<\/p>\n

The 2019 winners exploited and even strengthened public demand for what all populists feed on:<\/p>\n

\u2022 on the \u201csimplicity\u201d of solving problems;<\/p>\n

\u2022 for emotional relief after the shock of Russia\u2019s attack;<\/p>\n

\u2022 a \u201cnon-politician\u201d – a wizard who is able to fulfill wishes: after all, people want a miracle, so how can it be possible not to provide it to them?<\/p>\n

\u2022 refusal of complex answers.<\/p>\n

Ukrainians then voted for the carefully sold hope that a complex story could be switched off like a TV channel.<\/p>\n

But reality always follows political marketing sooner or later. It’s just a question of price…<\/p>\n

Seven years later, we understand better: the state cannot be replaced by a TV series. And history cannot be replaced by a daring script. The media project “Ukraine on Stage” was a resounding failure. And now we’ll all have to work together to clean up this mess of problems.<\/p>\n
