Hungary’s<\/span><\/span> new government is prepared to support European Union<\/span><\/span> sanctions against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church,<\/span><\/span> Patriarch Kirill,<\/span><\/span> and others who previously defended former Prime Minister Viktor Orban<\/span><\/span> .<\/strong><\/p>\n

The EU attempted to impose sanctions against Kirill back in 2022 for his support of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the spread of Russian propaganda. Budapest blocked the move, citing religious freedom as a reason.<\/p>\n

Brussels now expects that the new Prime Minister , P\u00e9ter Magyar,<\/span><\/span> will not stand in the way of the adoption of sanctions.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The head of the Hungarian parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Marton Hajdu<\/span><\/span> , said the new government would not block common EU steps to increase pressure on Russia<\/span><\/span> .<\/p>\n

Sanctions against Kirill could be included in the so-called mini-package, which EU ambassadors will discuss this week. It could also include Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev<\/span><\/span> , oligarch Vyacheslav Kantor<\/span><\/span> , and several “shadow fleet” vessels.<\/p>\n

Final approval of the package is expected at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on June 15. The full 21st sanctions package is planned to be presented in June and agreed upon by mid-July.<\/p>\n

The EU is also considering extending the sanctions from six months to one year, something Orban had previously actively opposed.<\/p>\n

On the eve, European diplomats announced that the 20th package of European Union sanctions will not include a complete ban on the provision of maritime services to Russian vessels<\/a> transporting oil and petroleum products.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that ambassadors from European Union countries agreed on a 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine and approved the 20th package of sanctions against Russia.<\/a><\/p>\n
