The ruling Tisza<\/span><\/span> party submitted its first proposal to parliament for amendments to the Hungarian<\/span><\/span> Constitution. The document proposes limiting the prime minister’s term to two terms, thus precluding Viktor Orb\u00e1n’s<\/span><\/span> return to the post of prime minister.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The initiative was introduced by Tisza faction MPs M\u00e1rton Melletey-Barna<\/span><\/span> and Istv\u00e1n Hantosi<\/span><\/span> . The bill was titled “The Sixteenth Amendment to the Basic Law of Hungary.”<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The document proposes amending the Constitution with a provision stipulating that no one who has already held the post for eight years or more, even with interruptions, may be elected prime minister. This amendment would take into account all prime ministerial mandates served after May 2, 1990.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Hungarian law does not limit the number of terms a prime minister can serve. Orb\u00e1n has led the government for five terms since 1998.<\/p>\n

Another provision of the bill calls for the dissolution of the Office for the Protection of Sovereignty<\/span><\/span> , established in 2023 under the Orb\u00e1n government. To achieve this, it proposes removing the provisions on “the protection of Hungary’s constitutional identity and Christian culture” from the Constitution.<\/p>\n

The changes also concern public interest asset management funds, through which, under the Fidesz<\/span><\/span> party’s rule, some universities and state institutions were transferred to foundation management.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To pass constitutional amendments, the support of two-thirds of parliament is required. This is the majority currently controlled by Tisza, led by Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar<\/span><\/span> .<\/p>\n

Earlier, Pryamyi reported<\/a> that newly elected Hungarian Prime Minister P\u00e9ter Magyar arrived at the country’s parliament on May 9 and took the oath of office. European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have already congratulated him on his inauguration.<\/p>\n

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a> also announced his intention to resign his parliamentary mandate and leave parliament. In the meantime, he plans to focus on reorganizing the Fidesz party following its election defeat.<\/p>\n
