NATO intelligence suggests that Russia may be working on a new way to deploy nuclear weapons directly on the seabed. This is a secret project called “Scythian”, which, according to a journalistic investigation by German TV channels WDR and NDR, is linked to the Russian Northern Fleet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is reported by<\/a> Tagesschau, citing an investigation by two German TV channels, WDR and NDR.<\/p>\n

Journalists spent months studying satellite imagery, Russian documents, and talking to experts and military personnel. The report suggests that Russia may have created a special missile based on the Syneva, a ballistic missile used by Russian submarines.<\/p>\n

According to the investigation, the missiles could be launched directly from the seabed from special mines or containers. It is assumed that they would be able to remain underwater for a long time and could be launched remotely.<\/p>\n

NATO believes that such installations would be extremely difficult to detect or destroy. The missiles, according to preliminary data, have a range of several thousand kilometers, and they themselves can carry nuclear warheads.<\/p>\n

The investigation also mentions the Russian ships “Zvezdochka” and the submarine “Sarov”, which could allegedly be used to install such systems in the White Sea area.<\/p>\n

Journalists point out that the 1971 international treaty prohibits the placement of nuclear weapons on the seabed only in international waters. At the same time, such actions in one’s own territorial waters are not formally prohibited by the document.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Russia has begun large-scale exercises to prepare for and possibly use nuclear forces<\/a> . The maneuvers lasted from May 19 to 21.<\/p>\n

As reported, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Russia would face “devastating consequences” if it dared to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine.<\/a>
