French President Emmanuel Macron had a phone conversation with the self-proclaimed leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, on May 24. The French leader urged Minsk not to intervene in Russia’s war against Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lukashenko’s press service said the phone conversation took place “at the initiative of the French side.” The parties discussed regional issues, as well as Belarus’ relations with the EU and France.<\/p>\n

At the same time, a journalistic source close to Macron reported that the French president raised the issue of Belarus’ possible participation in Russia’s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“He emphasized the risks for Belarus if it allows itself to be drawn into Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine,” the agency’s interlocutor reported.<\/p>\n

According to the source, Macron also called on Lukashenko to “take the necessary steps to improve relations between Belarus and Europe.”<\/p>\n

This is the first phone conversation between Macron and Lukashenko since February 2022. At that time, the French president called the Belarusian leader twice – before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and shortly after it.<\/p>\n

The material notes that in recent weeks Kyiv has been warning about possible Russian preparations for new attacks on the territory of Ukraine from Belarus.<\/p>\n
