This day combines Christian traditions, folk customs of the Green Holidays, and a number of established prohibitions that believers observe.

This is reported by “Pryamiy” .

Trinity, or Holy Trinity Day, is celebrated on the 50th day after Easter. In Christian tradition, the holiday is associated with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, after which they began to preach Christianity in different languages of the world. That is why the holiday is also called Pentecost.

In the Ukrainian tradition, the Trinity is closely intertwined with the Green Holidays, which symbolize the renewal of nature, life, and spiritual purification.

The main traditions of the Green Holidays

One of the most famous traditions is decorating houses, temples, and courtyards with green branches and fragrant herbs. The most common are:

flatbread;

mint;

lovage;

tarragon;

linden branches;

birch branch.

It is believed that consecrated greenery symbolizes God’s blessing and protection of the home. After the holidays, it is often kept in the home for a year.

Also on Trinity, believers attend church services, pray for the health of their loved ones, and spend time with their families. On the eve of the holiday, on Memorial Saturday, they traditionally remember deceased relatives.

What is recommended to do on Trinity?

According to church tradition, this day should be dedicated to spiritual life and family.

On Trinity, they recommend:

attend the festive liturgy;

to pray for loved ones and Ukraine;

spend the day with family;

help those who need support;

refrain from conflicts and insults.

The main content of the holiday is prayer, peace, and gratitude.

What can’t you do on Trinity?

There is no official list of household prohibitions in church canons, however, customs have formed in the Ukrainian tradition that have been observed by many generations.

Among the most common prohibitions:

hard physical labor;

working in the garden or field;

digging the ground and planting plants;

spring cleaning;

washing;

quarrels and conflicts;

insults, slander, and gossip.

According to popular belief, the day should be spent in peace and quiet, putting off difficult tasks for another time.

One of the most famous folk prohibitions is swimming in bodies of water during the Green Holidays. This tradition comes from ancient beliefs about the so-called Rusalny Week. The modern church does not associate this prohibition with religious teachings, but the custom itself remains a part of Ukrainian folk culture.

Folk signs for Trinity

Many weather signs are associated with Trinity. People believed that the weather on this day could predict what the summer and the upcoming harvest would be like.

In particular, it was considered:

rain on Trinity – to a good harvest and a large number of mushrooms;

clear weather – to a warm summer;

Abundant morning dew – to well-being and health in the family.

On Trinity in Ukraine, believers will traditionally participate in festive services, decorate their homes with greenery, and congratulate their relatives on the holiday. The main values of Trinity remain spiritual renewal, family unity, and prayer for peace.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

Today, May 31, Eastern Orthodox Christians will celebrate one of the greatest church holidays of the year — Trinity, or Pentecost.
