Russia has accused Ukraine of attacking the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant for the second time in two days. Analysts believe the Kremlin could use such claims to justify future escalation and new massive strikes on Ukrainian cities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was reported by<\/a> the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).<\/p>\n

On May 30 and 31, the occupation administration of the Zaporizhzhia NPP announced two alleged Ukrainian strikes on the station’s territory. According to the Russian side, on May 30, the machine room of the sixth power unit was damaged, and the next day, the transport workshop.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Southern Defense Forces denied these accusations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Russia regularly disseminates similar statements on the eve of meetings of the IAEA Board of Governors.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On May 31, IAEA officials working at the station confirmed damage to the engine room consistent with a drone strike. However, the agency was unable to determine who the drone belonged to.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

ISW noted that Russia systematically accuses Ukraine of attacks on the Zheleznodorozhny nuclear power plant and other civilian facilities in order to create an information basis for its own actions. According to analysts, the Kremlin uses such reports to justify escalation and potential strikes on Ukrainian territory.<\/p>\n

Analysts also suggest that Russia may soon use the story of the alleged attacks on the ZNPP as a pretext for a new large-scale attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned about the risk of increased Russian shelling in late May.<\/p>\n

Additional tension was heightened by statements by the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev. He threatened a “symmetrical response” to Ukrainian or NATO nuclear power plants in the event of the destruction of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.<\/p>\n

As previously reported, the Defense Forces of Southern Ukraine denied the Russian side’s claims about an alleged strike by Ukrainian military on power unit No. 6 of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant<\/a> . The department stated that the information disseminated by occupation resources is another information provocation by Russia.<\/p>\n
