But when it is taken out of the drawer solely to hurt a neighbor at his most difficult moment, it ceases to be memory. It turns into a cynical political weapon.

Recently, Polish politicians have been openly savoring conversations with Ukraine in the language of a moral prosecutor. Volhynia, the UPA, Bandera, accusations of “wrong memory”, “wrong symbols” and “wrong heroes” are thrown on the table without appeal. Ukrainians are methodically offered to take an exam for historical purity – and exclusively under close Polish supervision and according to their rules.

However, I have a perfectly logical question, as far as I’m concerned: If Warsaw is so principled in matters of historical morality, symbols, and responsibility, why does this principledness suffer from selective blindness in one eye?

Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini once received Poland’s highest award – the Order of the White Eagle. And you know what? He still hasn’t been deprived of it. And this means that in the Polish state memory there is a very convenient button called “historical context”. For Mussolini it works flawlessly. For justifying his own old diplomatic mistakes – too. For the toxic pages of his own pantheon – no problem.

Double Propaganda: How Poland Monopolizes the Right to Pain

But for Ukraine, this button is off. When it comes to Polish curtseys to dictators, occupiers, or imperial figures of the past, we are condescendingly explained: this is a complex history, a different time, geopolitical circumstances, but when it comes to the Ukrainian liberation tradition, all the “complexity” suddenly disappears. These are the standard double standards.

Undoubtedly, Poland has the absolute right to remember its victims. The Volyn tragedy is a bloody page that can neither be denied nor devalued. But the memory of its own victims does not give any country a mandate to turn Ukraine into an eternal defendant. And even more so does it not give the right to read lofty moral lectures to a nation that is just now bleeding in an existential war, covering the entire eastern flank of Europe with its body – including Poland itself.

I draw our attention to the chosen moment for the lecturing of Ukrainians. Ukraine is being attacked for its historical symbols not when it is strong, stable, and can afford a calm, equal discussion. It is being attacked right now – at a moment of maximum vulnerability, when the country is critically dependent on allied logistics, weapons, open borders, and diplomatic support.

That is, the government of a neighboring state strikes when it is cheapest and safest for itself to strike. This is not nobility or the defense of historical truth. This is banal self-affirmation at the expense of the weaker.

If Warsaw really wants an honest historical conversation, great, we are ready.

We talk about Ukrainian crimes of the past, but we put the history of Polish crimes against Ukrainians next to it.

Are we talking about the UPA? No problem. But then we also remember the pacification, the actions of the Home Army, and the Polish orders for Mussolini.

Poland again remembered the “crimes of the UPA”: how to respond to Ukraine

Morality that works exclusively against a neighbor is not morality. It is a cheap tool of political pressure used not only by Poland, but also by Muscovy, Hungary, and now, even Romania.

We need to build a cold, statesmanlike position and clearly articulate: we categorically refuse the role of an eternal historical beating boy. True reconciliation is never built on one-sided remorse. A reliable alliance never grows on the humiliation of a partner. And historical memory cannot be a stick with which to beat from a safe distance the one who today holds the front of the entire free world.

Ukrainians must regain their dignity from the depths crushed by empires, find respect for each other, and this will launch and strengthen the positions of Ukrainians in the international arena.

As a reminder, Polish President Karol Nawrocki wants to deprive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of Poland’s highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle, due to his decision to award the elite unit of the Ukrainian Special Forces the title of Heroes of the UPA .

The decree of the head of state noted that this was done in order to restore the historical traditions of the national army and in view of the exemplary performance of combat missions by the unit while protecting the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.

This decision caused discontent in the Polish Foreign Ministry. On May 28, a meeting was held between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Marcin Bosacki, and the Ambassador of Ukraine, Vasyl Bodnar, during which a protest was expressed and it was emphasized that this step is sensitive for Polish society.

By the way, in Lublin, Poland, the Ukrainian flag was removed from the city council building after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to give one of the Special Operations Forces units the honorary title “named after the Heroes of the UPA.”

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

• Materials published in the “OPINIONS” section reflect the opinion of the author of the publication, who bears full responsibility for the accuracy of the information.
• The editorial staff of prm.ua may not share the opinions expressed in the author’s material.
• The owner of the webpage in the “OPINIONS” section is the author of the publication.

Source: Author’s Facebook page Historical memory is a delicate and sacred matter.
