Petro Poroshenko welcomed<\/a> the opening of the first “Fundamentals” negotiation cluster<\/a> on social media, noting that it is the result of Ukraine’s years of work toward its European future.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“This night, Russia dealt one of the most massive blows to Ukraine. This happened today \u2013 on the day when Europe opens the first negotiating cluster on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in Luxembourg. Putin is demonstrating to Europe that he is fighting against Ukraine’s European choice, against European values, against European civilization itself, its history, culture, and faith. Europe has responded and made the long-awaited, historic decision to open the first negotiating cluster, ‘Basics,’ on the path to Ukraine’s membership in the European Union,” Poroshenko wrote.<\/p>\n

“It’s backed by dozens of reforms, the enormous work of diplomats, parliament, government, civil society, and our European partners. The participants of the Revolution of Dignity are also behind this decision. So are the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which preserved the state. We are building on the foundation that was created by years of work by the entire country.”<\/p>\n

“This is the beginning of a new stage of our European integration. We know what needs to be done, and we know the criteria and standards we must achieve. Not for Brussels, but first and foremost for ourselves\u2014for the sake of a better quality of life for citizens, the development of Ukrainian business, and the strengthening of the Ukrainian state. The alpha and omega of this process are the rule of law, democracy, the protection of human rights, and genuine political pluralism. It is by these criteria that Ukraine’s readiness for EU membership will be assessed,” the opposition leader emphasizes.<\/p>\n

“Today, it’s important to understand: the decision to open a negotiating cluster was made in Europe, but the speed and success of the negotiation process will depend primarily on Ukraine. On the work of parliament and government. On the quality of laws and their implementation. On our ability to ensure real change, not just a sham. We have already proven ourselves capable of achieving ambitious goals. The visa-free regime, the Association Agreement, candidate status, and the start of the negotiation process\u2014all of this was the result of hard work and strategic vision. Now we must prove we are capable of more. That we are capable not only of opening negotiations but also of successfully completing the entire process to full membership in the European Union,” Poroshenko wrote.<\/p>\n

“The faster we move along the path of reform, the closer will be the day when Ukraine will take its rightful place in the European Union family. And so it will be!” Petro Poroshenko is convinced.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, EU countries supported the opening of the first cluster of negotiations<\/a> on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU.<\/p>\n
