The European Union is considering changing the rules for extending temporary protection for Ukrainians who left due to the war. The new conditions may apply to men who are fit for military service.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spiegel writes<\/a> about this.<\/p>\n

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Commission plans to propose an extension of temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens fleeing Russian aggression.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the letter to the leaders of the EU countries notes that the extension of the status should take place in a way that does not weaken Ukraine’s defense capabilities.<\/p>\n

“This can be seen as a hint that, in particular, the recruitment of men of draft age should be made more difficult,” Spiegel journalists noted.<\/p>\n

At the same time, there are currently no specific mechanisms or a final solution.<\/p>\n

The issue was already discussed at a meeting of EU interior ministers in early June. At that time, Germany and a number of other states advocated revising the rules for accepting Ukrainian men of draft age.<\/p>\n

According to media reports, among the possible options being considered was a proposal to exclude men aged 23 to 60 from the EU directive on temporary protection.<\/p>\n

Currently, Ukrainians in European Union countries use a special protection mechanism that allows them to receive shelter without going through the standard asylum application process.<\/p>\n

This regime is valid until March 4, 2027. According to EU data, more than 4.3 million Ukrainians have used it.<\/p>\n

The European Commission stated that it will soon present proposals on the further operation of the temporary protection and its possible renewal.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, EU interior ministers met in Luxembourg on Thursday, June 4, to discuss the protection status of Ukrainian men. Austria is pushing for an end to automatic asylum for Ukrainians aged 23 to 60.<\/a><\/p>\n

As reported, Poland supports the idea of limiting access to temporary protection in European Union countries for Ukrainian men of military age<\/a> .<\/p>\n

In addition, Swedish Migration Minister Johan Forssell said that the European Union should consider limiting temporary protection for Ukrainian men of military age who travel abroad during a full-scale war.<\/a><\/p>\n
