The Military Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine, together with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor General’s Office, collected evidence against a senior rifleman of the National Guard who, while in Russian captivity, abused other Ukrainian prisoners of war.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the investigation, the soldier was captured by the Russian occupiers in June 2022. After that, he agreed to cooperate with the enemy and received the so-called position of “head of the household” on the 2nd floor of barracks No. 8 in “Kalinin Correctional Colony No. 27” in occupied Horlivka in the Donetsk region.<\/p>\n

As law enforcement officers established, the suspect, on the instructions of representatives of the occupation administration, put pressure on Ukrainian prisoners, threatened them with violence, and forced them to perform exhausting physical labor.<\/p>\n

“It has been established that one captured Ukrainian soldier died as a result of his torture, and dozens of others received injuries of varying severity,” the SBU reported.<\/p>\n

The man was released in a prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia in March 2025. After his return, law enforcement officers began collecting evidence, including testimony from other servicemen who were in the Russian colony with him.<\/p>\n

During a search of the suspect’s residence, law enforcement officers seized a smartphone with materials that could confirm his involvement in the crimes.<\/p>\n

He was informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 431 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violence or cruel treatment of other prisoners of war by a prisoner of war who is the eldest among them.<\/p>\n

The court chose custody as a preventive measure for the suspect. If found guilty, he faces up to 8 years in prison.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the Security Service of Ukraine has in absentia declared a suspect in a representative of the occupation penitentiary system in the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk region, who is suspected of cruel treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war.<\/a><\/p>\n
