Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sent the Order of the White Eagle, which he was previously awarded, to the Polish president. This came after a scandal surrounding the naming of a Ukrainian unit in honor of UPA heroes, which was perceived in Poland as a sign of disrespect.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He wrote about this in Telegram<\/a> .<\/p>\n

The President noted that the Order of the White Eagle is the highest state award of Poland, which symbolizes a special connection with the Polish state, the trust and gratitude of its people.<\/p>\n

“If it is believed that this special symbol can remain with Catherine II, Benito Mussolini, and Gerhard Schroeder, then we in Ukraine will not argue with this,” Zelensky said.<\/p>\n

The Head of State also published photos showing the order being sent to Poland by mail. <\/p>\n

At the same time, Zelensky thanked the Polish people for their support for Ukraine and stressed that Kyiv would continue to develop cooperation with Poland. According to him, interaction between the states of the region is one of the guarantees of security for both Ukraine and its neighbors.<\/p>\n

“Ukraine will continue to be open to all meaningful formats of interaction with Poland in order to try to prevent different interpretations of the complex and painful pages of the past of our peoples and to ensure due respect for all innocent victims of the 20th century,” Zelensky said.<\/p>\n

The President also stated that Ukraine will continue the fight against Russian aggression and work together with partners to achieve a just peace and ensure security in Europe.<\/p>\n

“We believed that the Order of the White Eagle was addressed to the Ukrainian people and our army in 2023. That’s what was said then. Today I sent the order to the President of Poland. I think the future will confirm the respect for Ukrainians,” Zelensky added.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed a decision<\/a> to deprive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle in connection with the awarding of the Separate Special Operations Center “North” of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine the honorary title “named after the Heroes of the UPA”.<\/p>\n

In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga announced that he would return the Commander’s Cross with the Star of the Order of Merit to Poland. At the same time, the head of the Presidential Office , Kyrylo Budanov, and the deputy head of the Presidential Office, Ihor Zhovkva, announced the return of Polish state awards.<\/a> They made this decision after Polish President Karol Nawrotsky stripped Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle.<\/p>\n
