In the French town of Nogent-le-Rotrou, an 82-year-old man opened fire on gendarmes who arrived after his wife called him. Two officers were injured in the shooting, and the attacker was detained after negotiations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Chartres prosecutor’s office, the incident was reported at 6:50 p.m. by the man’s wife. She said that her husband was going through an acute crisis, making conspiratorial and political statements, after which he took a hunting rifle and went out into the yard.<\/p>\n

According to the investigation, the pensioner was in a state of disorientation. He took a rifle, went out into the garden and shouted: “This is a revolution!” and “Macron has been overthrown!”.<\/p>\n

Five members of the gendarmerie’s surveillance and intervention unit arrived at the scene. The couple’s daughter told law enforcement officers where her father was hiding in the garden with a weapon.<\/p>\n

While trying to approach the man and start negotiations, he opened fire three times, wounding two gendarmes in the legs. The police returned fire, after which the attacker barricaded himself in the basement.<\/p>\n

Both wounded gendarmes were hospitalized. One was taken to the hospital in Chartres, the other to the Percy military hospital in Clamart.<\/p>\n

At around 10:50 p.m., the man surrendered to negotiators from the elite GIGN unit without resistance. He underwent surgery at a hospital in Le Mans for a hand injury.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor’s office has opened proceedings on the fact of attempted murder of government officials. The legality of the use of service weapons by gendarmes in accordance with the established procedure is being investigated separately. In addition, the man was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination, which should establish his mental state at the time of the attack.<\/p>\n

“To establish whether the man was aware of his actions at the time of the incident, he must undergo an examination by a psychiatrist,” the Chartres prosecutor’s office said.<\/p>\n
