The country received candidate status for accession to the European Union in June 2022.

“The EU is committed to advancing Moldova’s accession process rapidly, based on its sustained progress in reforms and a merit-based approach,” the European Union stressed.

The EU has also pledged to support Moldova’s integration into the EU’s internal market in key sectors. Up to €1.9 billion has been earmarked for the country for 2025-2027 under the new Growth Plan to support reforms within the framework of European integration.

At today’s summit, leaders will also highlight the benefits of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, which entered into force on 1 July 2016.

The EU is currently Moldova’s largest trading partner. EU countries account for about half of the country’s foreign trade, which totals more than 7 billion euros.

Special attention will be paid to issues of energy security, diversification of energy supply, and increasing energy efficiency.

The summit will also discuss digital cooperation, including harmonizing Moldovan legislation with EU norms on digital services and digital markets, countering disinformation and information manipulation, and strengthening cybersecurity.

Another topic will be the role of transport connections in deepening integration between the EU and Moldova.

EU leaders will also assess the country’s participation in EU programs and policies in the areas of youth, environment, research and development, and agriculture.

In addition, the parties will discuss further deepening cooperation in the field of security and defense. It is known that in 2021-2025, the EU allocated 197 million euros to Moldova through the European Peace Facility to support the modernization of its armed forces.

At the summit, Chisinau will also have the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to strengthening the security, preparedness, and resilience of the state, including cybersecurity.

Recall that on June 15, 2026, during the second intergovernmental conference on Moldova’s accession to the EU, negotiation cluster 1 “Fundamentals” (“Fundamental Issues”) was opened. On the same day, a similar decision was made regarding Ukraine.

At the same time, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk admitted that during the EU summit he supported the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar regarding the absence of any mention of Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union in the final document.

It was previously reported that Hungary opposed accelerating negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU .

The European Union also stated that Ukraine is ready to fulfill all the necessary conditions for membership in the association .

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will host Moldovan President Maia Sandu for the second EU-Moldova summit in Brussels on June 22.
