The United States and Iran have agreed to create a special “line of communication” that will help ensure the safe passage of merchant ships through the Strait of Hormuz and prevent possible incidents.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new communication channel was announced by mediators in Switzerland – Qatar and Pakistan. It is expected to allow the parties to quickly contact each other in case of risks or misunderstandings during the passage of ships.<\/p>\n

The memorandum provides for a 60-day period of guarantees for commercial shipping. During this time, Iran pledged to facilitate the unhindered, safe, and cost-free passage of ships between the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.<\/p>\n

CNN notes that control over the Strait of Hormuz remained one of Tehran’s main trump cards during negotiations with the United States.<\/p>\n

As early as June 20, the Iranian military command declared its readiness to completely block this sea route in response to Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and, as Tehran claimed, Washington’s failure to fulfill agreements to end the war.<\/p>\n

Additional tension was created by statements by US President Donald Trump. He declared his readiness to take the Strait of Hormuz under American control, which put further negotiations at risk of failure.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that talks between the US and Iran in Switzerland<\/a> were in jeopardy after US President Donald Trump’s harsh statements against Tehran. The Iranian delegation left the meeting, and the further fate of the negotiation process remains unknown.<\/p>\n

The day before, Iran restricted the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz<\/a> , despite signing an agreement with the United States. At the same time, the United States, according to journalists, gave Iran assurances that Israel would not intensify attacks in Lebanon.<\/p>\n
