Right-wing politician Abelardo de la Espriella has emerged victorious in the second round of Colombia’s presidential election, with nearly all ballots counted, putting him ahead of his main rival.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the electoral commission, after processing 99% of the ballots, de la Espriella is gaining about 49.7% of the vote. His opponent, leftist Ivan Cepeda, is receiving 48.7%.<\/p>\n

However, Cepeda is in no hurry to admit defeat. He stated that the published results are preliminary and a final decision has not yet been made.<\/p>\n

After the preliminary results were announced, de la Espriella addressed his supporters in Barranquilla. The politician, who calls himself “El Tigre” (“The Tiger”), declared that a new phase of development was beginning for the country and promised to uphold the Colombian Constitution.<\/p>\n

During the election campaign, de la Espriella advocated a tougher fight against drug cartels, illegal armed groups, and organized crime.<\/p>\n

He is also known for his support of US President Donald Trump. On the eve of the election, the American leader said that if de la Espriella wins, he can count on the full support of the United States.<\/p>\n
